We had a vision to transform a regular outdoor space at a labour camp into a magical place fit for a celebration with 250 amazing workers of Bahrain!
The outdoor galleries at the camp were functional so we had the idea to turn them into something more festive – a space sparkling with colourful decorations – for our group of very special guests celebrating Labour Day with us.
Here are the incredible before-and-after, showing how a simple space can become scene of festive cheer!
Before and after
Having carefully attended to every detail, our vision was for a colourful, enchanting celebration. We aimed to create a unique and special day for the labourers, where they would feel deeply appreciated and honoured. These festive efforts were a testament to the united spirit of the broader community, coming together to ensure they had a truly wonderful Labour Day.
While a clear vision served as the foundation for this Labour Day celebration, we needed the collaborative spirit of our partners, the support of the public, and the helping hands of our volunteers to bring it life.

Helping us Understand Labour’s Role in Bahrain’s Economy
Bahrain’s labourers are the backbone of the nation’s economic engine. They play a diverse role in building and maintaining crucial infrastructure:
- Construction: From laying the groundwork to creating the final touches, labourers handle everything from excavation to carpentry, ensuring the structural integrity and aesthetics of buildings.
- Infrastructure: They build and maintain Bahrain’s network of roads, utilities, waterways, and bridges. This unseen network of cables, pipes, and channels keeps the nation running with electricity, water, and transportation.
- Industry: Labourers’ expertise is crucial for operating and maintaining complex machinery in industries like Aluminium Bahrain (Alba), a key contributor to Bahrain’s global leadership in aluminium production.

Labour impact extends beyond physical structures:
- Economic Growth: Every project they undertake contributes directly to Bahrain’s GDP. The infrastructure they build facilitates trade, tourism, and development across various sectors.
- Business Environment: Efficient transportation networks and reliable utilities create a foundation for a thriving business environment, fostering trade, investment, and overall economic prosperity.
Labourers are the silent force behind Bahrain’s economic success. Their dedication and hard work are the foundation upon which the nation prospers.
Spotlight on Rhea’s Valuable Role in our Labour Day Campaign
OneHeartBahrain embraces a culture of inclusion, where everyone can contribute their unique talents and perspectives. This Labour Day celebration perfectly exemplified that commitment, thanks in part to the remarkable efforts of a very special volunteer – Rhea.
Rhea, a young adult with Down syndrome, actively volunteered her time and creativity for the event. With care and a keen eye for colour, Rhea crafted vibrant bunting and Labour Day flags that adorned the venue. These decorations added a burst of festive cheer and undeniably brought the whole event to life. Her artistic talent and enthusiasm were truly infectious.
But Rhea’s contributions went beyond captivating decorations. She also accepted the volunteer mission of capturing the heart of Labour Day through the voices of our volunteers. Rhea had prepared to interview them, seeking to understand what motivates them to give back and why celebrating Labour Day holds such significance. Her interviews were a great success. Next time we will bring her a microphone as at this event background noise drowned out her gentle voice. Audio challenges aside, this initiative showcased Rhea’s strong self-advocacy for intellectual disabilities. Through her reporting and personal insights, she champions inclusion within OneHeartBahrain, reminding us all of the importance of diverse voices and perspectives.
By inviting Rhea to participate in our campaign, we not only benefited from her creativity and dedication, but also offered her to take on the opportunity to grow in her role as a volunteer. These experiences further develop her abilities as a spokesperson for intellectual disabilities, allowing her to hone her communication skills and build confidence when interacting with a group. Transferable skills such as these will undoubtedly benefit her not just in her role as an inclusion ambassador but also in social and workplace settings.
Rhea’s story embodies the spirit of OneHeartBahrain. We believe in empowering individuals to explore their talents and passions, regardless of background or ability. We are incredibly proud of Rhea’s contributions and hope her story inspires others to embrace inclusion within their own communities. We also extend a warm invitation to other members of the specially-abled community to join us in our future goodwill campaigns, where their unique talents can be celebrated and utilised to make a positive difference.
Unveiling the Heart of Our Labour Day Campaign
While the festive atmosphere might seem effortless, a Labour Day campaign like this one requires a significant amount of behind-the-scenes work. At OneHeartBahrain we believe in careful planning, organisation, and execution – all fuelled by the commitment of our dedicated volunteer team. Each volunteer is able to contribute a significant role, from the initial brainstorming sessions to the day-of execution, ensuring a smooth and impactful experience for everyone involved.
Our Labour Day celebrations serve a two-fold purpose:
- Elevating Awareness: We strive to promote greater awareness within the wider community of the invaluable contributions labourers make – both on a social and economic level.
- Nurturing Integration: By coming together to celebrate these hard-working individuals, we aim to bridge the gap and cultivate a more cohesive community – a true Bahraini family. Labour Day becomes an opportunity not only to celebrate their work but also to express our respect and appreciation.
The ultimate goal of all our efforts is to create a truly memorable day for the labourers. We want them to feel honoured and recognised for their essential role in the community and within the Bahrain economy. A successful event allows them to witness the wider public’s acknowledgement and respect of their achievements and contributions to the Bahrain socio-economic landscape.
We believe there is immense potential for further social integration between labourers and the general public. By bringing them to the forefront and welcoming them as part of the OneHeartBahrain family, we hope to build loving connections for greater togetherness.

Looking Back on Labour Day
This Labour Day wasn’t just a celebration of workers’ contributions, it was a beautiful display of what we can achieve when we come together.
Firstly, the dedication of our volunteers was truly inspiring. Remember Rhea’s vibrant flags and banners? That’s just one example of how individual contributions can transform an event. Volunteering isn’t just about showing up on the day; it’s about sharing your creativity and skills throughout the entire process.
Secondly, we learned that a well-oiled team, even a small one where each member brings their unique value, is more effective than a large, amorphous group. This core crew becomes the engine that drives the entire event forward, attracting and motivating other volunteers and partners.
Finally, with each event, we gain invaluable experience. This Labour Day highlighted the importance of meticulous organisation. Clear task assignments and detailed pre-event briefings are essential for taking our campaigns to the next level. It all starts with a vision, and it’s up to all of us, the volunteers, to bring that vision to life. This year, we did just that, exceeding even our own expectations!
Who knows, with continued growth and dedication, one day we might even fill a football stadium for Labour Day!
